For your clothes, we would recommend bringing water resistant and wind proof outer layers, woolen socks and woolen underwear, preferably merino wool. For your shoes, we would advise that you wear shoes that are waterproof, well insulated and something that allows you to wear extra layers of woolen socks in if it gets colder.
The city of Tromsø lies around 69° northern latitude and therefore in the middle of the Aurora belt, which maximizes your chances of seeing the Northern Lights. If the sky is clear, the Aurora can be seen almost every night between September and early April. On our Northern Lights chases we have the possibility to cross into different nearby climate zones. This often gives us good chances to find clear sky, even if the sky above Tromsø is cloudy. Tromsø also offers an international airport, a variety of hotels, museums, restaurants and is surrounded by amazing nature. The gulf stream keeps the city fairly warm throughout the Norwegian winter.
In the city, there are several museums, art galleries, restaurants and cafes to check out. There's also the Arctic Cathedral which is a popular tourist attraction across the bridge. All museums except the Tromsø museum are within walking distance. The most popular museums are the Polaria and Polar Museum and they are both a short walk from the city center.
The Tromsø Cable Car also offers a stunning bird’s eye view of Tromsø as you ride up the mountains!
Taxi At the airport, you should be able to easily get a taxi from the taxi stand, that is located right outside the luggage conveyor belts. The trip to the city is about 10 to 15 minutes and should cost between 200 NOK to 350 NOK depending on your flight time and the traffic. To order a taxi, you can call Tromsø Taxis at +47 03011.
Airport Bus You can also take the airport bus, Flybussen to the city. The bus cost 90 NOK per adult and stops at 4 stops in the city: Scandic Ishavshotel, Tromsø Prostneset, Scandic Grand hotel and Polaria.
