This is our newest tour, guided by the same expert tour guides as our small group chase, giving you an excellent chance of the Aurora.

After the tour starts from Tromsø's city center, we will drive to where we expect the best weather conditions that night. On the journey there you will learn about the Northern Lights and how to photograph them. We will be happy to answer all questions you might have.

Once we've found clear sky, we will stop and help you set up your cameras. If conditions allow, we will choose a scenic locations with a beautiful foreground. We will take portraits of the Northern Lights and you to share them after the trip.

We provide hot drinks as well as hot water that you can use to prepare your own meal. The bus is heated, so you can always warm up inside.

Frequently Asked Questions

general northern lights chase northern lights

  1. We can’t tell you precisely what and how much to wear, since everybody feels the cold differently. While we had guests in February posing for pictures wearing only a t-shirt (before getting back into their winter gear, of course) others are more sensitive and need the warmest equipment possible to feel comfortable. Generally we recommend wearing woolen underwear, ideally made of merino wool. If you are especially sensitive to the cold and visit us during one of the colder months, you should consider wearing several layers. Besides that woolen socks, one or several layers, are a must-have, just like a hat and gloves or mittens. Mittens keep your fingers warmer than gloves. If you’re a photographer you can wear a thin pair of gloves as a base layer and mittens on top of that, which you can then easily take off once you need to adjust your camera, without getting your fingers too cold. Please don’t wear cotton, which gets moist and will make you freeze. On top of your woolen layers you should wear warm pants and a jacket that are comfortable enough to wear while exploring the city. We provide warm winter suits on our Northern Lights chases. You would take off thick layers of clothes before wearing the suits, so please don’t overdress. Also, please remember that our cars are warm and a long part of each chase may be spent driving, therefore you should always have the possibility to take something off to avoid sweating.

  2. The lights are not going to get dimmer, but articles that claim they do make a good click bait.

We recommend reading the following article: http://www.visittromso.no/en/northernlights_forever

The chances are the same between mid September and end March. What is more important and has a bigger impact on your chances of seeing the Northern Lights is how long you are staying in Tromsø and how many chases you go out on.

Seeing the Northern Lights can also be anything between a faint whitish glow in the sky to a green dancing show, that's something that is hard to say even if we have completely clear skies, which is another reason why we recommend at least 2 or 3 Northern Lights chases.

You may find out more about our success rate for seeing the Northern Lights by following us on our Facebook page where we post the result of every single chase we take.

  3. We do get children and elderly on our tours very often; so if you are alright with them sleeping late and perhaps sleeping in the car if they are tired, they may most certainly join you on your trip. In fact, our youngest guest was only 7 months old! Of course, the hours on the chases are very long and every individual is different.

We recommend families with children and elderly to join us on our (big group) Northern Lights chase, as it’s easier to keep the big bus warm and it also comes with an on-board toilet.

  4. We don't charge tax on our tours and/or packages, and there are no additional charges for the prices listed on our website.
